NewspaperJustice for war victims: humanity can no longer look the other way

May 6, 2025

Vladimir Putin is a mass murderer. But he’s not the only one with blood on his hands – US President Donald Trump is too, through complicity, inaction, political cynicism.

Once again this week, a Russian bomb hit a Ukrainian town. This time, it was Soumy, in north-eastern Ukraine. Twenty dead at least. Last week, it was Kryvyï Rih. The week before, another town. And so on, week after week, one attack follows another. The dead are piling up.

Some will call these words “hate speech” or “emotional exaggeration”. But the truth is there, brutal and unbearable: on Sunday morning, a religious feast day in Ukraine, as families went to church, as children walked in the streets with their parents, Russia deliberately shelled downtown Soumy. No military objective. No visible soldiers. Only civilians. Bodies lying on the sidewalk. A city bus, full of passengers, targeted and destroyed.

And this is not an isolated case. It’s a strategy. A campaign of terror.

What this shows is the repeated failure of the international community to protect the most vulnerable. And it must stop.

It is no longer enough to condemn. It is no longer enough to count the dead. We must act. The guilty must be brought to justice. Whether they are the dictators who order the strikes, or the heads of state who, by their silence or duplicity, allow these crimes to continue.

Every civilian casualty is a call to action. Every attack on a church, a hospital, a school, is an attack on our common humanity. International justice cannot be a luxury reserved for the victors, nor a diplomatic tool for selective use.

Justice for war victims must become a global priority. Immediate. Unconditional.

It’s time for those responsible – all those responsible – to answer for their actions before an independent and incorruptible justice system.
